Connecticut Marriage Laws


ID Requirement:

You will need to present photo identification.

Residency Requirement:

You do not have to be a resident of Connecticut.

Previous Marriages:

You will need to show your divorce decree, or have information regarding date, county and state of death of previous spouse. If your name has changed, you need to bring a certified copy of your divorce decree.

Waiting Period:

None. Some towns may require you to pick the license up the next day.

Fees:

$30-$35 approximately. Fee may vary from county to county.

Covenant Marriage Option:  No

Common Law Marriages: No

Proxy Marriages: No

Cousin Marriages: Yes

Same Sex Marriages: No

Other Tests:

A test for venereal disease (syphilis) is required. If the bride is under the age of 50 and capable of getting pregnant, she must have a Rubella (German Measles) susceptibility test. If a woman can show proof of immunity she is exempt from the test. You should plan on making a medical appointment for the tests approximately one month before your wedding. The test is valid for only 35 days. You will have to return to the doctor for the results and to receive the signed Premarital Certificate. The certificate has to be signed by a doctor and the applicants in the presence of the doctor.


Under 18:

If under sixteen years of age, the written consent of the judge of probate for the district where the minor resides must be obtained. Written parental consent is needed if under 18 years of age.

Officiants:

Any ordained or licensed clergymen, and justices of the peace.

Miscellaneous:

License is valid for sixty-five (65) days.

Copy of Certificate of Marriage:

You will need to contact the Town Clerk in the city or town where the marriage occurred.
